When making a coffin, should you choose solid wood or artificial wood?
When choosing the board material for making a coffin, solid wood board material and artificial board material have their own characteristics:
The cost of solid wood panels and artificial panels is very different
Solid wood board material:
·The cost of solid wood board material varies depending on the type of wood. For example, the price of ordinary solid wood such as pine wood is relatively affordable. Generally speaking, the price of pine wood per cubic meter may be around 1,000-2,000 yuan, but the cost of drying and processing of wood may also need to be considered for coffin making. If it is a higher-end solid wood, such as redwood, the price will be very expensive. Taking Burmese rosewood as an example, the price per cubic meter can reach tens of thousands of yuan. This is because redwood grows slowly, resources are scarce, and its wood is of excellent quality, which is very popular in the fields of furniture and coffin making.
·The manufacturing cost of solid wood coffins also includes the processing technology cost. Since the processing of solid wood needs to consider factors such as the texture and quality of the wood, the requirements for cutting and carving are high, and the labor cost will increase accordingly. Moreover, the size and shape of solid wood boards may be limited by the size of logs. For the production of some large coffins, if a whole piece of solid wood board is needed, it may be necessary to find larger logs, which will also increase the cost.
Artificial boards:
· The raw material cost of artificial boards is relatively low. For example, particleboard is made by pressing wood chips with glue, and fiberboard is made by processing wood fibers. These raw materials are widely available. Generally, the price of particleboard may be around 500-1000 yuan per cubic meter, and the price of fiberboard is slightly higher, about 1000-1500 yuan per cubic meter.
· Artificial boards are mass-produced by machines during the production process, with relatively uniform size specifications and relatively easy processing. When making coffins, the shape and size can be adjusted more conveniently, and the labor cost and processing cost are relatively low. Moreover, artificial boards can improve the appearance by pasting decorative paper and other processes, and the cost of decorative paper materials is relatively low, which makes the total cost of making coffins with artificial boards can be controlled at a low level.
The durability of solid wood panels and artificial panels is very different
Solid wood boards:
· The durability of solid wood is closely related to the type of wood. Hardwood solid woods such as oak and walnut are very durable. Take oak as an example. Its wood is hard, dense and compact. In a normal underground environment, oak coffins can resist soil pressure and microbial erosion and maintain good integrity. Generally, high-quality oak coffins can be used for decades or even hundreds of years.
· However, the durability of some softwood solid woods is relatively weak. For example, pine wood is soft and is prone to deformation and damage when it is under pressure or in a humid environment. Moreover, if the solid wood board is not well dried before use, it will crack and deform during subsequent use as the moisture content of the wood changes, affecting the durability of the coffin.
Artificial board:
· The durability of artificial board is generally not as good as that of solid wood board. Although particleboard and fiberboard have make certain treatments during the production process, their internal structure is bonded by glue. In a long-term humid environment, the glue may fail, resulting in delamination of the board. For example, if the particleboard is in an underground environment with high humidity, the wood chips inside it may expand due to absorbing too much water, making the board structure loose.
· However, some specially treated artificial boards, such as artificial boards with added moisture-proof agents and preservatives, will have improved durability. Solid wood boards may crack due to factors such as natural growth texture and changes in moisture content, but artificial boards do not have such problems. Their overall structure is tight and they rarely crack under normal use conditions.
· Artificial boards such as particleboards and MDF are made by pressing wood chips or fibers with glue under high temperature and high pressure. Their internal structure is relatively uniform and their physical properties are stable. Compared with solid wood boards, they are not easy to deform.
Overall
If you focus on higher durability and economic conditions allow, solid wood boards may be a better choice; if you consider cost factors and stability, artificial boards are also a feasible solution.
